How did you get started as a fitness writer & blogger, social media manager and also a fitness presenter?

I started in the fitness industry as a group exercise instructor before completing a Master’s degree about body image and the role of the fitness instructor. After I finished grad school, I wanted to share my thesis results with other fitness pros, so I taught myself how to get published in magazines. I’ve been a fitness writer for magazines, books and blogs ever since. Presenting at fitness conferences has been a natural extension of my passion for fitness education and a way for me to satisfy my ambitious career goals. The fitness industry can be quite competitive, so it was important for me to find a niche. I’ve been able to carve out a specialization while remaining a bit ahead of the curve by focusing on areas that a lot of fitness pros need guidance with: writing, blogging, social media management/education and fitness technology/activity tracking.

You initially gained notoriety on Instagram, how has that played into your overall "brand"?

Instagram has given me a platform to connect with people all over the world. My overall goal is to help people discover how to create their own unique healthy lifestyle. Over the past year my brand has started appealing more to pregnant women and new moms.  The content I share reflects the season of life I’m in and I hope that it continues to attract like-minded individuals that are inspired by my approach to health.

What's a day in the life like at Vie Active?

Hectic, fun, challenging and exciting!

We are constantly tethering between seasons (current, upcoming and future), brainstorming and problem solving and having lots of fun all at the same time. I don't believe it serves anyone to take yourself too seriously and so while I'm an advocate of pushing yourself outside your comfort zone (in work and workouts) daily, and I work my butt off, I think it's also really important to laugh and have fun. Often that's my team laughing AT me...

You're the founder of mizzfit.com, tv host & a fitness trend expert, how did to where you are right now?

To be perfectly honest, I got laid off from my job in advertising. I was a creative art director at one of the top advertising agencies in the country living in New York City. I lost my job during the 2007 recession, got really depressed and the gym/my workouts were the only thing that stayed constant in my life…and that brought me happiness during this tough time...

What inspired you to become a trainer and boxing coach?

I love helping people and was always an athlete growing up, but became really motivated when I got into boxing.  I’m inspired by people achieving their goals and overcoming challenges in life and love how boxing empowers women and builds confidence.

BEHIND THE BRAND with Joanne Encarnacion - Fitness/Lifestyle Blogger at gofitjo.com & Digital Creative

What is gofitjo.com and what inspired you to start blogging?

gofitjo.com is my creative outlet, it’s my blog, a personal journal of how I used fitness and healthy eating to create a life well lived. I’ve always been a writer. When I was in high school I took a creative writing class and I remember finding myself through that stage in life. Back then it was the outlet I needed to help me find my way back from adolescent depression. Writing helped me to sort out of my feelings when no one else could help me understand them. When I started the share my fitness journey it was on my personal Instagram account and I used the hashtag #gofitjo. Over half a year of finding my new passion for fitness I decided to open up a separate account @gofitjo to share all the meal prepping, non scale victories, and progress pictures I wanted to hide from my photographer/creative friends. Then I took my microblogging on Instagram to blogging on a new website.

BEHIND the BRAND with Sasha Exeter - Creative Director of SoSasha.com

What is SoSasha.com and what inspired you to start your blog?

SoSasha.com is a lifestyle blog with a heavy focus on fitness and wellness. The website is also a space where I am able to collaborate with brands to tell stories and share experiences with my followers. For years I was gaining success in my day job but was never fully happy with my life. My career was not fuelled by passion - which is always something I wanted for myself. I knew that I wanted to fuse my love and background in sports and fashion into a new career but each time I applied for jobs in this field I was repeatedly being told "No" because I didn't have functional experience in Sports Marketing or Fashion Business. I simply got tired of hearing the word "No" and decided to create my own opportunity and path to doing what I wanted to do and that was the main catalyst behind starting my blog...

What's the inspiration behind MeganMinns.com and what's the mission for your website?

My entrepreneurial journey officially started in 2014 when I started taking my first design clients. But it really started 15 years before then, when I designed my first website. I started from scratch. I knew nothing. But thanks to a simple website that taught me HTML, I started to learn how to build my own websites. It was a hobby that I played with throughout middle school and high school. In college, blogging became popular and I started an organizing blog in 2011. I loved customizing my blog. I spent countless hours designing and coding my blog... so much that I think I only published a handful of blog posts. I had no clue what I was doing when it came to actually writing helpful content. But I was sucked in by the tech side of it. By 2014, it became clear that people could actually build a business from their blog. I realized custom blog design was a thing and that I could do that too! I wasn't loving full-time work. I had a great job in Human Resources but felt frustrated by the lack of control. I didn't like getting in trouble for being 5 minutes late. The internal politics drove my mad. And exhausting myself at my full-time job, meant following my passion was harder and harder. So in 2014, I officially started offering custom branding and design services. I got clients quickly and loved every minute of it.

What's a day in the life like as Health Editor for Glow Magazine?

There is no typical day, as much of what I do changes like trends do.  I could be working out with Nike master trainer Eva Redpath, evaredpath.com, running at a Shoppers Drug Mart Run for WOMEN event, runforwomen.ca, previewing athleticwear collections, like New Balance, Lolë and more, indulging in the latest healthy food launches, testing new products (from running shoes to supplements to green cleaners), and more.
